Frequently Asked Questions: Maumere Flores Voyages

What is the closest airport to Maumere?
Maumere is served directly by Frans Seda Airport (IATA code MOF), three kilometres east of the town centre. International travellers connect via Bali Denpasar (DPS) or Jakarta (CGK) and take a domestic regional flight, typically on Wings Air, Citilink, or seasonally Garuda Indonesia. Full arrival logistics and the bag-allowance pitfall first-timers often miss are documented in our Frans Seda Airport (MOF) arrival guide.
Do I need a visa to visit Maumere?
Most travellers from Australia, the EU, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and most ASEAN countries can either obtain a Visa on Arrival at their first Indonesian entry point or use the Indonesia e-VOA portal in advance. Maumere itself has no immigration counter, so you must clear immigration at Bali, Jakarta, or another international gateway before your domestic flight to MOF. Visa policy changes occasionally; we always remind clients to check the current rules with the Indonesian embassy in their country two weeks before departure.
When is the best time to visit Maumere?
The dry season from May to October is the best window across all activities. July and August produce peak dive visibility on Maumere Bay; September is our team’s quiet favourite for combined diving, culture and quieter highland villages. The wet season from November to April is still travel-able but introduces road and flight buffer requirements. Read the full month-by-month breakdown in our best time to visit Maumere article.
Is Maumere safe for solo travellers and families?
Yes. Maumere is one of the safer regional towns in eastern Indonesia, with low petty-crime rates and a strong community presence in the dive and tourism sector. Our private tours include a single guide-driver pair for the full programme, which adds an additional layer of continuity for solo travellers and families with children. We recommend the same standard sensible precautions you would take in any unfamiliar town: use the hotel safe for passports, do not leave valuables in dive bags on the boat deck, and stay aware on Pasar Geliting market days when foot traffic is heavy.
What is the diving like at Maumere Bay compared to Komodo?
It is different and complementary. Komodo is famous for big-current pelagic encounters; Maumere Bay is a slower, more contemplative reef famous for its post-1992 coral restoration story and for the fish life that has returned with it. Visibility windows are excellent in dry season but the spectacle is the recovery itself, not adrenaline. Many of our returning guests do both — Komodo on a separate Labuan Bajo trip, Maumere on a separate eastern Flores trip — and value them differently. Read more in our Maumere Bay diving guide.
Can I climb Mount Egon, and is it safe?
Yes, with our partner ranger. Mount Egon is an active stratovolcano monitored by Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). Our ranger checks the official advisory before every climb and we reroute to the lower Detukeli ridge if the alert level is raised above two. We have never put a guest on the summit during an elevated advisory and we will refund or rebook the day if conditions force a cancellation.
How does the overland transfer to Larantuka work?
The 137-kilometre Trans-Flores highway between Maumere and Larantuka is a four-hour drive plus stops, and we treat it as a half-day cultural experience in itself rather than a transfer. Day five of our standard 5-day private tour ends in Larantuka with a hand-off to our sister team. Full route detail is in our Maumere to Larantuka overland guide.
How do I pay and is there a cancellation policy?
We accept international bank transfer in USD, IDR transfer, and most major credit cards via a Stripe payment link. Standard terms are a thirty percent deposit at booking confirmation and balance due thirty days before arrival. Cancellations made more than thirty days ahead receive a full deposit refund less bank fees; closer windows step down on a published schedule we share at booking. We do not charge change fees for itinerary modifications made more than two weeks ahead. For firm Holy Week dates we ask for full payment ninety days ahead because of upstream commitments at our Larantuka partner.
What should I pack for an eastern Flores tour?
For diving: your own mask and fins, reef-safe sunscreen, a light long-sleeve rashguard for Maumere Bay’s UV exposure, an underwater camera if you have one. For Mount Egon: closed walking shoes with grip, a light fleece or windbreaker for the pre-dawn rim, a head torch, a refillable water bottle. For village days at Sikka and Krokowolon: shoulder-covering tops as a respectful default for women and men, a small donation in Indonesian rupiah for host families, and an open mind. The cultural background you will encounter is summarised in the Wikipedia entry for the Sikka people; we recommend reading it on the plane.
Can the itinerary be customised?
Yes. The 5-day private tour is our most-booked baseline and many travellers stay with it as published. Common customisations include: extending to seven days to add Kelimutu via Ende, extending to nine days to add Lembata whaling village context, swapping a dive day for a textile-only day at Watublapi, or compressing the cultural anchor into a shorter homestay format. We do not run pre-set departures; every itinerary is built around your dates. Start with our 5-day private tour page and message us with what you would like to add or remove.
